The diverse Protea plants are at home in the southern hemisphere.
They were already found on the supercontinent Gondwana and are over
90 million years old. The Protea have adapted to the harsh environment
in their distribution areas, where forest fires are frequent. While
fire destroys them, it also stimulates the release of their fire-resistant
seeds. Ashes are the perfect breeding ground: just like the Pheonix,
they are reborn through the fire.

Protea plants are especially vulnerable to habitat destruction and severely
affected by climate change. It would be so sad to lose these beautiful
fireworks of nature!

Die Proteusgewächse sind ein wahres Wunder der Natur. Sie sind über 90 Millionen
Jahre alt und kamen schon auf dem Superkontinent Gondwana vor. In den
Verbreitungsgebieten auf der südlichen Hemisphäre, wo es häufig zu Waldbränden kommt,
haben sie sich an die raue Umgebung angepasst. Hier überleben sie durch ihre Fähigkeit,
feuerfeste Samen zu produzieren, die in und durch die Asche wiedergeboren werden. Es
ist an uns, die Protea zu schützen, indem wir ihren Lebensraum erhalten und sie vor
dem Klimawandel bewahren, um diese prachtvollen Feuerwerke der Natur noch viele
weitere Jahre bewundern zu können.
