A fever dream pressed to vinyl: Jungle Echoes is the 1959 cult classic by Chaino,
the self-styled “percussion genius of Africa.” Born Leon Johnson in Philadelphia,
Chaino crafted an elaborate mythos of tribal origins and supernatural rhythm,
channeling it into this wild, hypnotic LP. Originally released on Omega Disk and
reissued by Black Sweat and Moi J’Connais, the album is a surreal blend of primal
drumming, ritualistic chants, and Exotica kitsch. It’s less a document of Africa
than a projection of mid-century American fantasy—jungle as imagined from a Hollywood
backlot. Still, its raw energy and unrelenting percussion make it a singular artifact
of outsider sound.

Ein fiebriger Traum auf Vinyl: Jungle Echoes ist der Kultklassiker von 1959 von Chaino,
dem selbsternannten „Percussion-Genie Afrikas“. Geboren als Leon Johnson in Philadelphia,
erschuf Chaino einen elaborierten Mythos von Stammesherkunft und übernatürlichem Rhythmus,
den er in dieses wilde, hypnotische Album kanalisiert. Ursprünglich auf Omega Disk
veröffentlicht und von Black Sweat und Moi J’Connais neu aufgelegt, ist das Album eine
surreale Mischung aus ursprünglichem Trommeln, rituellen Gesängen und Exotica-Kitsch. Es
ist weniger ein Dokument Afrikas als vielmehr eine Projektion der amerikanischen Fantasie
der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts – ein Dschungel, wie er sich auf einem Hollywood-Filmset
vorgestellt wird. Dennoch machen seine rohe Energie und die unermüdliche Percussion es
zu einem einzigartigen Artefakt des Outsider-Sounds.
