und Produktionsbedingungen angebaut. Sie ist ein wichtiger Rohstoff für
eine vielfältige und profitträchtige Wertschöpfungskette und wird weltweit
an den Börsen gehandelt. Baumwolle steht im Mittelpunkt des Streits um A
grarsubventionen und ist ein wichtiges Instrument in der Entwicklungshilfe.
An ihr haben internationale Chemiefirmen ebensoviel Interesse wie Vertreter
der ökologischen Landwirtschaft, denn sie verbraucht im Vergleich mit anderen
Kulturpflanzen die grösste Menge an Wasser, Dünger und Pestiziden.

der Baumwolle geschaffen: das Leben der Baumwollbauern und ihre Arbeitsbedingungen,
den Anbau, Ernte, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung der Baumwolle. Christina Kleineidam,
die den Fotografen auf seinen Reisen begleitet hat, beschreibt das Gesehene,
und gibt Hintergrundinformationen zu den spezifischen Problemen der einzelnen
Länder. - Die Ökonomin Pietra Rivoli erläutert in ihrem Vorwort die globalen
Zusammenhänge von Anbau und Vermarktung der Baumwolle.

Cotton is grown on all continents under the most diverse environmental and
production conditions. It is an important raw material for a diverse and
profitable value chain and is traded on stock exchanges worldwide. Cotton is
at the centre of the dispute over agricultural subsidies and is an important
instrument in development aid. International chemical companies have as much
interest in it as representatives of organic agriculture, because it consumes
the greatest amount of water, fertiliser and pesticides compared to other crops.

lives of cotton farmers and their working conditions, the cultivation, harvesting,
processing and marketing of cotton. Christina Kleineidam, who accompanied the
photographer on his travels, describes what she has seen and gives background
information on the specific problems of the individual countries. - In her
foreword, economist Pietra Rivoli explains the global connections between the
cultivation and marketing of cotton.
