Nahawa Doumbia is one of Mali’s defining vocalists of the last four decades.
Her work journeys through progressive stages of musical evolution and sonic vogues, making it hard to summarize or even comprehend. She’s played a part in popular music since the late ‘70s, as her version of Wassoulou music developed from vocals-and-guitar duo into full-scale touring bands packing a bombastic, electrified punch.
As Doumbia puts it, “My music has changed multiple times to this day…The more I progressed in my musical career, the more instruments I have had accompany my songs.”
Awesome Tapes From Africa released Doumbia’s debut recording La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 1 in August 2019, building on the success of the label’s first-ever reissue back in 2011, Doumbia’s La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 3.
This seminal classic, which is still sought-after in Mali today, will finally be available for the first time internationally with remastered audio on LP, CD, Tape and Digital formats. The recording looks back to the beginning of Doumbia’s long career, when she was performing in a simple voice and acoustic guitar format.
That was before she added bass and drums, and finally the electric guitar and synths for which she became known more recently.
Released in 1981 by the excellent Côte d’Ivoire-based AS Records, the singer was barely 20 years old when it was recorded. She was accompanied by her future husband N’Gou Bagayoko on acoustic guitar, whose style echoes the nimble runs of traditional kamele n’goni players. The stark simplicity of this highly intimate recording—the audible room acoustics,
the occasionally in-the-red vocals—do not obscure the mature strength of her voice.
On Vol 1 Doumbia performs her songs with the tenacity and hunger of a young artist on the cusp.

Nahawa Doumbia ist eine der bedeutendsten Sängerinnen Malis der letzten vier Jahrzehnte.
Ihr Werk durchläuft immer neue Stadien der musikalischen Entwicklung und klangliche Moden, so dass es schwer ist, es zusammenzufassen oder gar zu verstehen. Dieser bahnbrechende Klassiker, der in Mali auch heute noch begehrt ist, wird endlich zum ersten Mal international mit remastertem Ton auf LP, CD, Kassette und digitalem Format erhältlich sein. Die Aufnahme blickt auf die Anfänge von Doumbias langer Karriere zurück, als sie noch mit einfacher Stimme und akustischer Gitarre auftrat.
Das war, bevor sie Bass und Schlagzeug hinzufügte und schließlich die elektrische Gitarre und die Synthesizer, für die sie in jüngerer Zeit bekannt wurde.
Das 1981 von dem exzellenten, in der Elfenbeinküste ansässigen Label AS Records veröffentlichte Album war gerade einmal 20 Jahre alt, als die Sängerin es aufnahm. Begleitet wurde sie von ihrem späteren Ehemann N'Gou Bagayoko an der Akustikgitarre, dessen Stil an die flinken Läufe der traditionellen Kamele n'Goni-Spieler erinnert. Die schlichte Einfachheit dieser sehr intimen Aufnahme - die hörbare Raumakustik,
die gelegentlich in den Hintergrund tretende Stimme - täuscht nicht über die reife Kraft ihrer Stimme hinweg.
Auf Vol. 1 trägt Doumbia ihre Lieder mit der Hartnäckigkeit und dem Hunger einer jungen Künstlerin vor, die an der Schwelle steht.

Awesome Tapes From Africa is a record label and web site operated by Brian Shimkovitz.
The site was founded in 2006 in Brooklyn, New York.
The site was created as a way for Shimkovitz to share music he had come across while on a scholarship in Ghana.
He was interested in the variety of genres and artists he found, distributed largely on cassette tapes at markets, but that he had not come across outside West Africa.
In 2011 he transitioned the site from just a blog with posted recordings of collected tapes posted without the artists' permission to a commercial record label.
The goal of the company is to seed and expand an audience for the artists presented as well as provide opportunities to sell albums and tour.
Artists are paid every six months and receive 50% of the profits from an album.
Tapes presented on Awesome Tapes come from a variety of sources: gathered in Ghanaian street markets, purchased in stores in the US, or sent by others over the internet.
In addition to the website, Shimkovitz DJ's concerts, clubs and at festivals as Awesome Tapes From Africa, as well as hosts a show on Dublab.
Most Awesome Tapes From Africa releases are official rereleases of out-of-print cassettes from African musicians and bands.
SK Kakraba's Songs of Paapieye is the first album to consist of a new release. Although music is distributed in Africa via MP3 on mobile phones, Shimkovitz says the widest variety of music in West Africa is still available on cassette tape.
In the journal Public Culture, Awesome Tapes From Africa, along with record labels Sublime Frequencies and Parallel World, is discussed as being emblematic of "World Music 2.0" for combining the "open source ethics of online networks with long-standing countercultural networks of circulation" within cassette culture and music distribution in developing nations.
